Cher Ami
They say that if a pigeon finds a new route from a certain place to another, it is easier for the next pigeon to find that same route. Even though the two pigeons would not have had any contact to each other. But what is a new route for a pigeon? All the routes in the sky are straight. There is not any maps or routes in the world of the pigeon, only straight lines and points where they end.
The world of the carrier pigeon consists only of one point and infinity of lines that end in the one point. That one point is the home of the pigeon, and at the same time it is the place where it delivers the message. Somebody must take the pigeon away from it’s home for it to be able to return with a message. And the message that is delivered, you cannot answer it. Unless, of course, the message came from a home of another set of pigeons, and there is a pigeon waiting to get back home.
Here is two opposite models of communication. In the first instance, the communication happens on it’s own accord, and even without the participants being aware of it. It is the collective unconsciousness that guides the pigeons. In the second instance the communication has the most private form you can imagine. You cannot even answer the message.
When I am in love, I want to send my loved one birds, not flowers.

The Teachings of the Classics
What are the truths we hold to be self-evident?
The lines are drawn. Are you aware of this line between us?
You should be. You wanted to do the right thing, and did the wrong thing. He is
not wise who never makes mistakes, he is wise who makes mistakes and puts them
right.
This world is a house of flames. We know that those who fight must know how to
fight and how not to fight; to tell the truth and not to tell the truth; to be
servile and also how not to be servile; to keep one’s promises and also not to
keep them; how to confront a danger, how to avoid danger; to be known by sight
and unknown. Suffering isn’t enough. It is not enough but learn still. You must
be ready to take over. The ground is made of gold. Oh! gracious vision, flooding
the heart with joy! All the world will be our own.
What is a man? In our view, the principal characteristic of man is that he has
the freedom to choose love. This is the “Easy Way.” Tonight the time has come
to enter the Way most hard to find. We have a world to gain. A blessed hope
springs up on us! All of the world is of our making. What of it can we call
ours? Above the temple hangs the moon. If the moon is an old friend, how can we
flee the world? No more the grief of parting. The night is growing old!
We invite you to eat with us. Only these hands now acting, build the road, the
walls, the towers. We are the scum of the earth. We shall free the world of
shadow; every shop and every room, every road and every meadow. The fleeting
world exists no more. Long is the way a ghost must tread. We are asking for
your verdict.

Arkinen hysteria tekee temaattisen katsauksen vuoden 2009 lopun suomalaiseen nykytaiteeseen.
Näyttelyn on koonnut KuM Pasi Rauhala.
Avajaiset 9.9. klo 18-20, Tervetuloa!
Näyttely on auki 10.9. – 27.9.2009
To-Su klo 13-18, Ma-Ke suljettu!
Ilmainen sisäänpääsy!

Nosotros que hemos mirado con ironia e indulgencia los objectos abigarrados de fin de siglo.
A crude translation: we who have seen with irony and indulgency the motley objects of the end of the century. The word motley refers to the colourful costume of the harlequin character in commedia dell’arte. Motley: exhibiting great diversity of elements; heterogeneous. Who is speaking, and what are these motley objects?
The sentence is written with charcoal on the gallery wall, in the middle of childlike drawings of people, or a nation. Is it the artist, or the nation that is speaking?
Translation always alters the meaning. Or more precisely, the objects themselves are different in different languages. I could not understand what abigarrado meant when the artists translated it as baroque. The word baroque takes me to another century than the one that is at stake here.
Similarly the connotations of motley, the harlequin for example, are not intended by the artists themselves. All the same, the exhibition can be introduced like this because translation comes to be the theme of the show.
The motley objects of the end of the century are different for us here in Finland than the ones for the people of Cuba. Our irony and indulgency are different. Even the nostalgia is different. And contrary to common belief, the visual language of fine arts is fortunately not universal and same for everybody.
Maykel Linares installation El fantasma de la ilustracion translates as The Fantom of Illustration. Aliuska Rodrígues: La Marcha del pueblo combatiente is The March of the Fighting People. The paintings of Niels Reyes are called: La noche en Karelia, Baño de sol, Una conversación para empezar, En la plaza, Jardín de la Infancia. In english: A Night in Karelia, Shower of Sun, A Conversation to Start With, At The Square, and The Garden of Childhood.
