Aukeama is a Finnish word meaning an opening of pages in a book, a spread. A new opening reveals something unknown.
Corners is a Finnish-Swedish group of four artists that has been working together since 2021 under the project title There Might Be Corners but the Center Is on the Move. They have made site-specific interrelational experiments in which the exhibition space and its features play a fundamental role as part of the works and the whole installation.
Each member of the group concentrates in spatial matters also in their individual practice. As a group they pay special attention to the openness and transparency of the working process. Everyone brings their own thoughts, sketches and materials with them but they are used in a collective way. The joint works are like material and spatial conversations in which they build a new artistic expression layer upon layer on each other´s.
In 2022 Corners had three exhibitions with this scheme. They made only approximate plans for each space and built the rest of the installation improvising on-site. The group’s working method developed into like a being of its own and the joint œuvre became recognisable as the work of the Corners. Independent curator Katie McDougall was following the group’s process throughout the year. She wrote an essay about each exhibition with a wider perspective and finding connections between the group’s expression and current world events.
The essays and documentations of the first exhibitions have now been compiled into a book, and it has taken There Might Be Corners but the Center Is on the Move into a certain end-point.
Welcome to a book release and an opening of a new chapter of the Corners and exhibition Aukeama at Oksasenkatu 11 Gallery.
