LONGING FOR A (REAL) CONNECTION
5—27 October 2024
Wed—Fri 12 am—6 pm, Sat—Sun12 am—5 pm
Opening on Friday 4 October at 5—8 pm
A series of video works and installation that discuss the accessibility and/or inaccessibility of various forms of closeness and intimacy in digital life. The works explore what is missing in - and questions the power of - online connection to convey (real) emotion. Focusing on times when touch is longed for, or emotional connection crucial, the artist draw attention to the division between mental perception and corporeal experience that is entangled in these experiences - the benefits, limitations and depth of the virtual connection and the way in which it sometimes feels like you are filling one need while digging a hole for another.
This project is supported by Arts Promotion Centre Finland (Taike).
Dana Neilson is a multidisciplinary artist working with installation, moving image and ceramics. Her work process is slow and intuitive, often guided by, or scavenged from the environment she finds herself in. Between curiosity and dissection she pulls apart different ideas, concepts and materials searching for a deeper understanding of relationships, experience and connection - more questions arise. She holds a MA from Aalto University, and BFA in Photography from Concordia University. Her work has been exhibited in Europe, Mexico and North America.
