Maintain

Forget, remember

Let go, preserve

Look closely, find

In the depths of the darkest January, on an evening when one feels the urge to light every lamp and other light source they own, the gloom momentarily recedes even from the deepest corners of the home. The gaze clings to things that the dark season has deliberately or inadvertently tried to erase from awareness. Dust, grime, stains, and stickiness emerge from seams, joints, dents, scratches, and holes. In cupboards and under the bed lie broken clothes, piles of objects, and a box of parts whose origins are no longer remembered.

These are things bought from shops and supermarkets. Things inherited, gifted, or received without asking. Things lovingly handmade through time and care. Things held in one’s hands over a lifetime, without understanding what they mean, where they came from, or where they are going. Things whose presence is barely noticed, faded almost to nothing over the years. Promises once made, but never kept.

How can one let go of outdated dreams?

The exhibition Dust Sword and the Universal Stone explores the understanding of material reality through images and objects related to cleaning and maintenance. Observations have been made by ten young artists living in Helsinki, who have witnessed each other’s letting go, rebirths, and forward movements for over a decade.
