MEMExhibition is an experimental, experiential and participatory exhibition about memes.

In everyday language, the word ‘meme’ usually refers to combinations of image and text shared on social media. Yet, by definition, memes are information units that spread from one person to the next through text, speech, gestures, rituals or other such imitable cultural artefacts.

The term meme was introduced by Richard Dawkins in The Selfish Gene (1976), where memes were presented as a cultural analogy to genes. Like genes, memes replicate, mutate and go through a process similar to natural selection.

The purpose of MEMExhibition is to produce experiential knowledge via encounters and conversations about how memes are experienced in this time, space and especially through this exhibition.

MEMExhibition is championed by HYPERREAALIYAH, a collectively built simulation of an artist who’s scrabbling their way back to meaning. Since 2014, HYPERREAALIYAH has researched memes and memetics while producing works, actions and happenings about the subject.

Unfortunately Oksasenkatu 11 is not wheelchair accessible. If you have physical or other limitations that prevent you from making it to the exhibition, please take contact to exhibition facilitator Jenna Jauhiainen at jenna@hyperreaaliyah.com. It is possible to experience MEMExhibition partly through remote access.

The vernissage is on Friday the 1st of November, 2019, from 6PM to 9PM. The exhibition is open until 24th of November through Wednesday to Sunday from 12PM to 6PM.

This exhibition is supported by KunnonMuutto and Ylioppilasteatteri. Thank you!

Welcome, everyone.
