The PEEK!-ing Experience:ssä Oksasenkatu 11:sta on viimeisenä viikkona 16.-21.6. nähtävillä siellä koetun performanssisarjan dokumentaatio ja näyttely, joka tutkii queer- ja transihmisten näkyvyyttä yhä vihamielisemmäksi muuttuvassa yhteiskunnassa dragin kautta.

Näyttely on ilmainen ja avoinna tiistaista sunnuntaihin klo 14-19. Näyttely on juhannuspäivä 20.6. kiinni.

Muuttamalla katsojat esiintyjiksi ohjelmistossa osallistujat vietiin seremoniallisen leikin ja dragin maailmaan ylisuuren mittakaavan naamioidensa ja asujensa kautta. Videodokumentaation lisäksi näyttelyssä esitetään valokuvasarja PEEK!:n kuvausretkiltä, joissa drag-hahmojen avulla häiritään arkista elämää.

PEEK! on yhteistyö taiteilijaduon Status Queer (Kolbrún Inga Söring ja Sam Message) ja visuaalisen antropologin sekä valokuvaajan Elsa Groenerin välillä.Näyttely on toteutettu yhteistyössä paikallisen Kiss My ARS -kollektiivin kanssa.

Drag ei ole pelkästään sukupuolten välillä leikkimistä – se on itsensä muuntautumisen prosessi sukupuolten välillä, yläpuolella ja tuolla puolen. Normeja rikkovana mediumina se avaa tilaa erilaisille tavoille ajatella ja kohdata. Pohjoismaisessa tiukan esteettisen normin kontekstissa – hillittyjen sävyjen, luonnonkuitujen ja mustien talvitakkien maailmassa – oleminen räikeä, vaihtoehtoinen tai yksinkertaisesti erilainen tekee sinusta katseiden magneetin. Hypernäkyvyys on tunne siitä, että kaikki katsovat sinua, ja täällä, missä tuijottaminen on epäkohteliasta, tuo tunne ajautuu outoihin sfääreihin: tunnet katseet selässäsi, kunnes käännyt katsomaan takaisin – ja näet silmien siirtyvän kattoon, lattiaan, puhelimeen.

"Emme halua vain, että ihmiset kuulevat viestimme siitä, että taistelu queer- ja transoikeuksien puolesta ei suinkaan ole ohi – haluamme heidän kokevan sen. Mutta samalla haluamme näyttää, keitä me olemme: ylpeitä, iloisia, leikkisiä. Ilomme on vastarintaamme, ja tämä näyttely on leikin karnevaali – sopivalla annoksella politiikkaa, vastarintaa ja ajattelemisen aihetta," sanoo taiteilija Kolbrún Inga Söring.

PEEK! on taideteosten ja performanssien sarja, joka tutkii trans- ja queer-ihmisten näkyvyyttä julkisessa tilassa. PEEK!:ssä tämä kokemus viedään äärimmilleen – Status Queerin hahmot Sinfluencer (Kolbrún Inga Söring) ja The Meatbaby (Sam Message) tunkeutuvat räväköinä ja absurdeina drag-hahmoina arkiseen maailmaan: leikkien, koetellen, testaten. Toisaalta PEEK! on värien, vastarinnan ja queer-ilon räjähdys pohjoismaisessa harmaudessa. Toisaalta se pyrkii paljastamaan ei-normatiivisen elämän todellisuuden laajemmalle yleisölle ja rakentamaan ymmärrystä LGBTQIAP+-ihmisten jatkuvasta taistelusta pohjoismaisessa nykykontekstissa.

Näyttelyn taustalla on Ruotsin onneton LGBTQIA+ ihmisoikeustilanne.

ILGA rankkasi Ruotsin Pohjoismaiden heikoimmaksi LGBTQ+-oikeuksien suhteen vuonna 2025, ja TGEU:n mukaan Ruotsi on myös Pohjoismaiden huonoin erityisesti transoikeuksien osalta. Nuorten LGBTQAI+-hyväksyntä on laskussa: SVT:n mukaan 15 % nuorista suhtautuu kielteisesti LGBTQ+-ihmisiin (helmikuu 2026), kun luku oli vain 3 % vuonna 2013. Nuorilla LGBTQAI+-ihmisillä on heikompi mielenterveys ja huonommat elinolosuhteet kuin cis-hetero-ikätovereillaan, ja transihmisillä tilanne on vielä heikompi (MUCF, Folkhälsomyndigheten). Ruotsissa ei edelleenkään tunnusteta juridisesti ei-binäärisiä ihmisiä, ja juridisen sukupuolen muuttaminen vaatii edelleen lääkärin hyväksynnän. Sukupuoliklinikan jonossa odotetaan viisi vuotta lähetteestä diagnoosiin, ja alle 18-vuotiaat eivät voi enää saada hoitoa sukupuolidysforiaan edes vanhempien suostumuksella.

"Ruotsi ratsastaa ylpeästi moraalisella korkeahevosellaan asemoiden itsensä feministiseksi utopiaksi, mutta todellisuudessa Ruotsin aika LGBTQ+-oikeuksien edelläkävijänä on pitkään ohi. Mielipiteet taantuvat, oikeudelliset suojat jäävät jälkeen muusta Pohjolasta jaLGBTQ+-ihmisten elämänlaatu on edelleen merkittävästi heikompi kuin muun väestön. Olemme täällä haastamaan tämän," sanoo taiteilija Sam Message.

The PEEK!-ing Experience, 4–21 June 2026
Status Queer & Elsa Groener (Sweden)

During the final week of The PEEK!-ing Experience, from 16–21 June, Oksasenkatu 11 will host an exhibition and documentation of the performance series previously experienced in the space. The exhibition explores the visibility of queer and trans people in an increasingly hostile society through the medium of drag.

The exhibition is free of charge and open from Tuesday to Sunday, 2–7 pm. Closed on Midsummer Day 20th of June.

By transforming spectators into performers, the project invited participants into a world of ceremonial play and drag through oversized masks and costumes. In addition to video documentation, the exhibition presents a photographic series from PEEK!’s excursions, where drag characters disrupt everyday life.

PEEK! is a collaboration between the artist duo Status Queer (Kolbrún Inga Söring and Sam Message) and visual anthropologist and photographer Elsa Groener. The exhibition has been realized in collaboration with the local Kiss My ARS Collective.

Drag is not merely about playing between genders—it is a process of self-transformation between, above, and beyond gender. As a medium that challenges norms, it opens space for alternative ways of thinking and relating to one another. In the Nordic context of strict aesthetic norms—a world of muted tones, natural fibers, and black winter coats—being flamboyant, alternative, or simply different makes you a magnet for attention. Hypervisibility is the feeling that everyone is watching you, and here, where staring is considered impolite, that feeling enters strange territory: you sense eyes on your back until you turn around and look—and see gazes suddenly shift to the ceiling, the floor, or a phone.

“We don’t just want people to hear our message that the struggle for queer and trans rights is far from over—we want them to experience it. At the same time, we want to show who we are: proud, joyful, playful. Our joy is our resistance, and this exhibition is a carnival of play—with a fitting dose of politics, resistance, and food for thought,” says artist Kolbrún Inga Söring.

PEEK! is a series of artworks and performances that examines the visibility of trans and queer people in public space. In PEEK!, this experience is pushed to the extreme: Status Queer’s characters Sinfluencer (Kolbrún Inga Söring) and The Meatbaby (Sam Message) invade everyday environments as bold and absurd drag personas—playing, probing, and testing. On one hand, PEEK! is an explosion of color, resistance, and queer joy in the midst of Nordic grayness. On the other, it seeks to reveal the realities of non-normative lives to a broader audience and foster understanding of the ongoing struggles faced by LGBTQIAP+ people in the contemporary Nordic context.

The exhibition is rooted in Sweden’s troubling LGBTQIA+ human rights situation.

According to ILGA’s 2025 rankings, Sweden placed last among the Nordic countries in terms of LGBTQ+ rights, and according to TGEU, Sweden also ranks lowest in the Nordic region specifically regarding trans rights. Acceptance of LGBTQIA+ people among young people is declining: according to SVT, 15% of young people held negative views of LGBTQ+ people in February 2026, compared with only 3% in 2013. Young LGBTQIA+ people experience poorer mental health and living conditions than their cisgender heterosexual peers, and the situation is even worse for trans people (MUCF, Public Health Agency of Sweden). Sweden still does not legally recognize non-binary people, and changing one’s legal gender still requires medical approval. Waiting times at gender identity clinics can reach five years from referral to diagnosis, and people under 18 can no longer access treatment for gender dysphoria, even with parental consent.

“Sweden proudly rides its moral high horse, positioning itself as a feminist utopia, but in reality Sweden’s time as a pioneer of LGBTQ+ rights is long gone. Public attitudes are regressing, legal protections are lagging behind the rest of the Nordic region, and the quality of life of LGBTQ+ people remains significantly lower than that of the general population. We are here to challenge that,” says artist Sam Message.

On Thursday, June 4, Oksasenkatu 11 will open The PEEK!-ing Experience, an exhibition and public programme exploring the visibility of queer and trans people in an increasingly hostile social climate. By transforming viewers into performers, the exhibition invites participants into a world of ceremonial play and drama through oversized masks and costumes. The exhibition runs until June 21.

The PEEK!-ing Experience Turns Viewers into Participants

PEEK! is a collaboration between the artist duo Status Queer (Kolbrún Inga Söring and Sam Message) and visual anthropologist and photographer Elsa Groener.

By donning oversized masks and costumes representing different LGBTQ+ archetypes, visitors transform themselves, celebrate, and connect with one another through these larger-than-life characters. At the same time, a giant, judgmental Nordic gaze remains present—ready to capture this intimate moment and broadcast it into the digital ether.

Alongside the installation, the exhibition presents a photographic series documenting PEEK!’s performance excursions, where drag characters disrupt everyday life. The exhibition is realised in collaboration with the local collective Kiss My ARS.
