“We have to make what is forbidden visible!”
Hilma af Klint
“Make The Forbidden Visible” is an instruction-based participative performance series that utilizes methods from theater, live action role-playing and visual arts. The series draws from history exploring different stories and coping strategies of the ones who have been left outside society. We search for voices of the oppressed that resonate strongly with current times.
Instruction based performances are a new and emerging opportunity in the art field to combine methods from multiple fields. They break the usual boundary between an audience and the performer. They offer the participant an active role, not just observing. In the instruction based performances the participants take on a role as members of the researched group in question and live through a series of scenes based on documentary material. Each piece has a preparatory workshop, guided scenes and a debrief. At its best immersing into a participative performance heals and strengthens you as you live as another person through your own body.
The first two parts of the series "Inner Domain" and "Fenezar!" premiere in July 2024 at gallery Oksasenkatu 11 in Helsinki. The third part of the series "Sisters" happens in autumn 2024. When we get more funding, the series will continue.
Part 1: Inner Domain, information and sign-up:
“Inner Domain” is an instruction-based participatory performance that combines live-action role-playing, theatre, and visual arts. The piece explores sexuality between women through the esoteric. It draws inspiration from the life of Swedish visual artist Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) and the different all-female groups she was part of. In these groups, women held seances, practiced theosophy, and found special connections with each other at the start of the 20th century. The group of women, many of whom were artists, created a safe space to break society’s norms on gender, sexuality, and romance through spiritual practices. This event is adult-only!
Inner Domain will happen in English and Finnish, Fenezar! only in Finnish and Sisters in English and Finnish.
