Elnygin performanssi käsittelee sukupuolta transnäkulmasta. Young Baltic Artist of the Year -palkinnon vuonna 2019 saanut Rag Elnyg on laaja-alainen media-, kuva- ja performanssitaiteilija, joka tekee fyysisiä ja kehollisia ja ääntä sisältäviä esityksiä. Rag Elnyg kertoo omin sanoin performanssista (teksti englanniksi alempana).

Rag Elnyg is a multidisciplinary media-, visual and performance artist based in Helsinki. Elnyg won the Young Baltic Artist of the Year award in 2019. He is known from his physical and corporeal performances involving sound. The performance focuses on gender from a trans perspective. Elnyg elaborates with a text about his performance at the festival:

“If you are a man, you are expected to do some things. If you are a woman, others. If you are born one way, you may proceed as such. Ole hyvää. Kiitos. Nakemiin. HallintOttelu. But if you are a girl, you can be an asshole on the football pitch, it is going to be ok. If you are a man, then, you are a jerk. However, it may be because people don't take women seriously when they get angry. Or don't give them as much space to be and speak.

There is good and bad everywhere but she ruined my good mood and I never thought I would think one day as a man playing football ”you are not the only one here with ovaries you, asshole.” But I can't say that today. It is not what people want to hear because now, I only can talk about how harder it is to be a woman. Maybe it is why it seems more FTM than MTF detransition. Transladies, they know the shit they sign for. Transmen, they just think everything will be easy for them as long as they pass because it is what is said. Some of what is promised happen. I don't get wolf whistled at anymore. But not all your problems miraculously disappear because you look like a man.

People see me as a threat when I mean no harm, I don't get help or rides the way I used to and people are more violent now when they address me. There is no need to be nice with men. They are all jerks, aren't they? You can say goodbye to the solidarity you used to have for average men live through competition when women tend to team. The “Us” women against “them” patriarchic assholes. Now you are one of them. Also, most Wicca, white magic sisterhoods or witches' circle would close you their doors.

The first time I realised it was when my ex-roomate was going there. To know I could never ever ever go broke my heart. I remember I stayed there crying all I could. I will never be allowed because I am not a woman. I thought at first it was unfair but in the end, I can't blame women for wanting men-free space. We've been committing unpunished atrocities to them for millennia and some are still going. How could I ever blame them for hating us? It just makes me sad for even without a penis and against what most could think as I am transgender, I can't help being a man. I didn't choose it. Transition might be a choice, Being transgender isn't.

Funnily enough, Trans women are also sometimes forbidden in those circles based on their genitalia at birth or "impostor" background. I always wondered if those circles would take me then. I might have a beard, I still do have ovaries and a vagina. Vittu Voimala, well, till I can get a penis, I still somehow fit. But no. I don't. Even if, I will carry Two X chromosomes forever. If you are born one way but feel the other, there are things expected from you beyond the usually expected from each of both mainstream genders.

If you are a man born female, you can't like makeup or bubble baths anymore. You have to like scratching your balls in front of sports on TV with a can of ale. And cut your hair. If you are a trans lady, you have to wear your hair long and be over feminine to be taken seriously as a woman on a daily basis. However then, some in queer / feminist circles might still be angry and push you the opposite way towards non-binariness. They might discriminate against you for displaying a “fake and degradating image of womanhood” when all you do is trying to cope with your dysphoria. Unlike most trans males my problem with dance never has been to “have to wear the girl outfit”. When I took ballet classes around age 5, I really really really wanted to wear a leotard. In case you too, and you are applying for transmasculine gender reassignment as well, don't tell that to the doctors. Please, just lie.”

Narrating WAR kutsuu katsojaa pohtimaan ‘tiedostetun’ ja ‘tiedostomattoman’ suhdetta ihmiskunnan jaetussa historiassa. Performatiivisessa lausunnassa luetellaan kattava lista sotia, taisteluita, ryöstöjä, piirityksiä, kapinoita, vallankumouksia ja pommituksia 3000 vuotta ennen ajanlaskun alkua ja päättyen nykypäivään. Ihmisolennot näyttäytyvät jatkuvana väkivaltan ja konfliktin historiana. Esitys on englanninkielinen.

Ali Akbar Mehta (b.1983, Mumbai) on transmedian kanssa työskentelevä taiteilija, kuraattori, tutkija ja kirjoittaja. Mehtan tutkimuspohjaisesti rakentuva taiteellinen praktiikka tuottaa immersiivisiä ja interaktiivisia arkistoja, joissa hän kartoittaa tietoa moninäkökulmaisesti väkivallasta, konfliktista ja traumasta. Tutkimalla konfliktialueita sekä hallitsevien voimarakenteiden narratiiveja Mehta tuo esiin unohdettuja kehoja, hävinneitä verkostoja, kadotettua dataa ja huomioimatta jätettyjä ympäristöjä. Voiko taiteellinen mielikuvitus vaikuttaa politiikan, väkivalllan ja oikeudemukaisuuden käsityksiin?

Ali Akbar Mehta (b.1983, Mumbai) is a Transmedia artist, curator, researcher, and writer. His research-based practice is to create immersive, interactive archival projects that map knowledges through a multifocal lens of violence, conflict, and trauma. By examining narratives drawn from zones of conflict and dominant power structures, his works foreground overlooked bodies, data, networks, and ecologies – asking, how can artistic imagination affect politics of power, violence and justice?

J Kohon laaja-alainen työskentely äänen parissa käsittää niin ääni-installaatiota, radioteoksia, live-esiintymisiä, äänitteitä kuin tapahtumien ja kuuntelukävelyjen sekä -karttojen suunnittelua ja toteuttamista. Viimeaikoina hänen kiinnostuksensa on suuntautunut yhä enenevissä määrin kuuntelun käytäntöihin ja teorioihin.

Maunula-talolla Koholta kuullaan esitys, jossa elektroniset ja akustiset äänet yhdistyvät kenttä-äänityksiin muodostaen moniulotteisia toisiinsa nivoutuvia ja toisiaan sivuavia sekä silitteleviä silmukoita.

J Koho's wide-ranging work with sound includes sound installations, radio works, live performances, recordings as well as planning events and implementing sound walks and maps. Lately, Koho's interest has increasingly focused on the practices and theories of listening.

At the Maunula-talo, Koho presents a work in which electronic and acoustic sounds are combined with field recordings, which form multidimensional sound loops that overlap and caress each other.

Mitä feminismi pitää sisällään tänä päivänä? Paineessa käsittelee intersektionaalisuutta, etuoikeuksien monimutkaisuutta ja valtasuhteita. Teoksessa tilastolliset faktat sukupuolittuneesta väkivallasta Suomessa yhdistyvät metaforiseen ja tositapahtumiin pohjautuvaan fiktiiviseen kerrontaan.

Martta Tuomaala (s. 1983, Lieto) on laaja-alainen, Helsingissä työskentelevä taiteilija, joka valmistui taiteen maisteriksi Aalto-yliopiston kuvataiteen koulutusohjelmasta vuonna 2014. Tuomaala on keskittynyt liikkuvan kuvan eri muotoihin, mutta yhteisölliset ja osallistavat piirteet sekä taisteleva tutkimus ovat myös läsnä hänen taiteellisessa työskentelyssään. Tuomaalan teoksissa toistuvat yksilöiden ja yhteisöjen kamppailut sekä työelämän murrosta ja vallan väärinkäyttöä käsittelevät teemat. Tuomaala on työskennellyt erilaisissa matalapalkka-alojen tehtävissä vuosien ajan ja nämä kokemukset ovat vaikuttaneet hänen teostensa aiheisiin, joissa korostuvat erityisesti työntekijöiden oikeudet. Tuomaala on AV-Arkin johtokunnan jäsen sekä elokuva- ja mediataiteen tuotantotalo Kenno Filmin perustajajäseniä.

What does it take to be a feminist today? Under Pressure deals with intersectionality and the complexity of privileges and power relations. In the artwork, statistical facts about discrimination against women in Finland are intertwined with metaphorical and fictional storytelling based on real life situations.

Martta Tuomaala (MA, b. 1983) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Helsinki. Tuomaala focuses on various forms of film, video and installation. Her artistic practice involves elements of socially engaged art and militant research. Common themes in her artworks include workers’ everyday life, the struggles of individuals and communities, and abuse of power. Tuomaala is currently a board member in AV-Arkki (the Distribution Centre for Finnish Media Art). Tuomaala is a co-founder of Kenno Filmi co-op, a production house for film & media art.

HEMULOORDI x Rag Elnyg x Ilai Lehto: Superhero Academy (2022)

Superhero Academy on HEMULOORDIN, Rag Elnygin ja Ilai Lehdon yhteistyönä tekemä videoteos, joka oli osa heidän 2022 Titanik galleriassa esillä ollutta taidenäyttelyä Miehetär. 

Kenen tytär on Miehetär? Kenen poika on Päivi Kolme supervoimaa yhtyy, mieheyksiä puetaan ja riisutaan – ja kontenttia syntyy!  

Yhteinen videoteos oli näyttelyn tietynlainen keskipiste tai kokoava voima. Ragnarilla on supersankarimainen alter ego - Cheetah Man, joka perustuu hänen kokemaansa yhteyteen gepardeihin. Hän ja HEMULOORDI halusivat alkaa rakentamaan teosta tämän hahmon ympärille sekä Ragin idealle Superhero Academystä, johon Cheetahman pyrkisi. Superhero Academy on eräänlainen maskuliinisuuden raati, missä tosi tv-tyyliin kilpaillaan mieheydessä onnistumisessa. Supersankarius kytkeytyy valmiissa videoteoksessa miehisen performanssin parodiaksi, mutta teoksen lopussa raadin suosikkivalinnaksi nouseekin yllättäen "näkymätön mies" - eli mies, joka on riisuttu kaikista näkyvistä maskuliinisuuden piirteistä ja tunnusmerkeistä.

Halusimme lopulta kaikki esiintyä hakijoina supersankari akatemiaan ja jokainen toi kuvaustilanteeseen rekvisiittansa ja hahmonsa. Kuvaustilanne oli hyvin improvisoitu tapahtuma, jossa toisten ideoihin ja impulseihin tartuttiin. 

Videolla esiintyvät "sixpackit" eli kaljaboxien ja kalsareiden yhdistelmät, ovat osa Ilai Lehdon vanhaa teossarjaa. Videolla Lehto sukeltaa myös nyljetyistä teddykarhuista kokoon kursimaansa ja puettavaan veistokseensa "Talja", joka nähdään videossa verokarhun päällä. Lehto työsti myös sixpack-veistoksistaan ja Cheetahmanin hahmosta digitaaliset pikseligrafiikka versiot, jotka nähdään valmiilla videolla.  HEMULOORDI hioi videon valmiiseen muotoonsa leikkaamalla ja animoimalla siitä kokonaisuuden, johon hän koosti myös ääniraidan. HEMULOORDI kuroi materiaalin yhteen animoimalla Superhero Academylle tuomarit joiden dubbaajana hän myös toimii.

Superhero Academy is HEMULOORDI’s, Rag Elnyg’s and Ilai Lehto’s collaborative video art work which was a part of their Miehetär exhibition at Titanik -gallery in 2022.

Superhero Academy was the exhibitions center piece or a constitutional force. Ragnar has a superhero-like alter ego - Cheetah Man which is based on his felt connection with cheetahs. Elnyh and HEMULOORDI wanted to build an art work on this particular character with Rag’s idea of a Superhero Academy where Cheetah Man would be applying. Superhero Academy is something like a jury for masculinity where, like in reality-TV, people are competing in a successful performance of manhood. Superherodom is connected to a parody of masculine performance in the artt work but surprisingly “the invisible man” becomes the favourite pick of the jury, a man who has been stripped off all visible signs and signifiers of masculinity.

In the end, we all wanted act as applicants for the Superhero Academy, and eveybody brough their own characters, costumes and props to the shooting which was mostly improvised and reactive to impulses and ideas of the partakers.The "sixpacks, the merging of cardboard beer boxes and underpants were taken from an older Ilai Lehto’s art series. In the video Lehto dives into his sculpture “Talja” (Hide) which is made from skinned teddy bears and seen in the costume of tax bear. Lehto also worked on their sixpack-sculptures and Cheetah Man’s digital pixel version seen on the video.

HEMULOORDI polished the video to it’s ready form by editing and animating the whole session to it’s totality with an audio track.HEMULOORDI also animated the Superhero Academy jury and dubbed the lines for them.

Kokeellisen elektroniikan seura (KOELSE) rakastaa elektroniikkaromua ja rakentaa siitä soittimia, joilla soittaa tulevaisuuden tanssi ja/tai rituaalimusiikkia. Keikkojen lisäksi KOELSE rakentaa installaatioita ja opettaa rakentamaan soittimia. KOELSEn projekteja on nähty ja kuultu eri puolilla Eurooppaa museoissa ja gallerioissa, mutta myös joutomailla ja squatteilla vuodesta 2002 lähtien. Festivaaleilla KOELSEn kanssa esiintyy performanssitaiteilijat Meri Hietala ja Maija Kivi.

Meri Hietala is an multimedia artist currently based in Kouvola, Finland. She creates performances, site specific installations, happenings and sound art. Her artistic work can be also categorized as environmental and participatory art, she often collaborates in multimedia projects, sharing her sound and body based practice. Hietala has exhibited in solo and group shows and created public installations, sound art and performance art actions in Europe and Australia since 2007.

Maija Kivi: “As a visual artist I like to combine different materials and techniques to fuel the creative process. Drawing and painting are the backbone of my work, the place where my stories and characters come from. The alluring glittery pop aesthetics are reminiscent of the nostalgic world of childhood that distorts like a mirage in the looking glass when you try to reach it. My characters have escaped into a dreamland of fantasy, forever writhing in agony and ecstasy of innocence lost, absolutely alive.”

Association of experimental electronics (KOELSE) is a group of experimental electronics enthusiasts. They gather old consumer-electronics and transform it into sound producing devices. With these devices they play concerts, build installations out of them and teach how to build similar things. KOELSE’s projects have been seen and heard around Europe on museums and galleries, but also wastelands and squats since 2002. KOELSE will collaborate with performance artists Meri Hietala ja Maija Kivi.

Baila et Bordello on alus, joka vierailee jok'ikisessä satamassa jakamassa seksipositiviisuuden ilosanomaa. Se on unelma, utopia ja absurdistinen performanssi, mutta myös todellinen viisivuotissuunnitelma, joka lähestyy loppuaan. Aina valmiina julistettavaksi, kauniit ja rohkeat.

Abdication of the Geniuses -festival continues the legacy of Nerojen päivä & Normien yö (The Day of the Geniuses & The Norms of the Night) -festival held in 2019 at Okssasenkatu 11 -gallery and Studio Là-Bas space at Cable Factroy. The festival is organised by Oksasenkatu 11 -association.
